Big Fix for a nice little portable radio

I thought a digital portable radio with preset stations would be a great product, but hadn't seen any on the market. Imagine my surprise when I saw this little beauty hanging on a shelf in Academy Sports Store. Well, of course I picked one up right away, especially when I saw it was less than $15. After getting it home and trying it out I was pleasantly surprised to hear a pretty good sound even with the ear buds provided. The digital controls worked well, and it was easy to set up the Memory with preset stations (and plenty of them). It was then I found the serious flaw in this product - the lowest volume level is too high for comfortable listening (and I have been accused of being a bit hard of hearing). I started reading reviews here and saw others had the same complaint. Well, I fired off a note to Coby hoping for a cure or workaround for the problem. Then looking thru my electronic gear, I came across a set of ear buds that had a VOLUME Control included - a small slide switch on the wires. I thought could it be... Sure enough, I hooked them up and slid the volume to low, and viola!! the sound was quite low. I could even increase the radio to 3 or 4 bars and cut it back to a comfortable listening level. Unfortunately, I don't have any model info on the ear bud set. I'm pretty sure they came with my HP laptop as they have the HP emblem on the ear pieces. Other volume control enabled ear buds may be available that could work.
I wanted to get this out to all you folks so a good product could be useful in all respects. (the 'Preset' control could use a two way capability so you can tune previous as well as next stations), but you can 'Tune' back to a previous station to accomplish this function. The hanging loop is a nice bit of langiappe also - I like being able to hang it around my neck when walking the Maltese pups. Overall, this radio is a nice bit of technology at a good price.

Yea it doesn't have amazing sound quality but never-the less is still a very good radio. It is easy to use lightweight and pretty durable, it also has a long life. This is definitely the best radio for its price range!

I have been a fan of Sangean pocket radios mainly because of excellent reception and availability of TV audio. I dropped the last one a few times and the headphone jack is broken. I almost bought another Sangean until I realized that due to recent switch of TV to digital, I will not get TV audio anymore. I felt that the high cost of Sangean is not worth it without TV audio. So, I started looking and found Coby to meet my basic requirment i.e. digital tuning. Per the reviews, it appeared to be an acceptable item. So, I bought it and found it to be worth more than the price I paid. The reception is great. i have only two gripes about it. One is that the lowest level of volume is too loud. When I listen to AM, I have to push my head phone little away from ears to adjust for that loudness. Trust me on this, I am a heavy metal fan; most of the time highest volume level is not loud enough for me. The other is that it gets lots of static when near computer and halogen lamps. Having said all that, if my current unit breaks, I will buy the same model again.

Good digital AM Radio

I was looking for a good digital AM radio to listen to talk radio during things like kids' soccer practice. I hate analog radios, as I can never tune them clearly, and when I do, I'm too scared to change the station at commercial time. With this digital radio, that problem is solved. I haven't yet noticed a problem with battery life as others have noticed. I can listen to my radio stations. I'd hope it would be a bit clearer, like my car radio AM tuner, but this is fine enough to hear the program. The size is nice and small to either leave in my pocket, or hang around my neck by the long loop which comes with it. The price is right. It's not easy to find a handheld AM radio these days, especially one with a digital tuner. There were only a few to choose from, and I'm very happy that I chose this one.

Digital is nice, but not with the volume control...

It's nice to have a digital radio, but the problem is that the volume control is way too sensitive. There are 16 settings for the volume, but even the 1st one is too loud for me. Other than that, it would be a pretty good radio!
