Combine one of Country's most recognized voices with the most revered holiday classics of all time and music fans have reason to celebrate the season with Wynonna's first ever solo holiday album, A Classic Christmas. Wynonna's warm delivery on holiday favorites such as "The Christmas Song", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "O Holy Night" leave the listener yearning for the smell of chestnuts roasting on the open fire. Wynonna delivers a few gems too that'll leave you speechless, especially the emotional "Ave Maria" recorded in Italianized Latin. From start to finish, A Classic Christmas certainly lives up to its name.

Tell Me Why

Wynonna's first solo holiday album comes across as a thing of beauty, but also as something of a surprise, and not just because she tackles "Ave Maria" in Italianized Latin. Though paired with the original team behind the Judds (producer Brent Maher, musical arranger/guitarist Don Potter), the normally fiery redhead seems subdued on this collection of mostly reverent holiday fare. Throughout, Bergen White's arrangements are fresh and often sophisticated, Maher and Potter hang just the right amount of tinsel on the tree, and Wynonna's soaring soprano remains a wondrous instrument. (Even her kids, Grace and Elijah, impress on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," the album's lightest offering.) But the down-home diva seems to hold back both passion and power, particularly on the show-your-stuff standard "O Holy Night." Where she most comes alive is on Potter's 1983 offering, "It's the Messiah," a modern take on the birth of Jesus. It's a lovely coda to this smooth, if oddly spiceless, eggnog entry. --Alanna Nash

Not Wynonna's usual delivery...

Wynonna is fantastic; this is just a more mellow performance for her. Good background Christmas music.

HEAR HER - SEE HER -- GREAT ALBUM SAYS A FAN!

OK, I did this backwards. I saw her for the first time "LIVE" on the second stop of her "2007 Christmas Classic Tour" -- and knew the basics about Wynonna's music catalog. I knew "the hits", and of course the great story of her rise to fame.

BUT ... when I heard her voice about 3 weeks ago "live" in concert ...
A simple stage set.
A simple music backdrop.
A roaring yet delicate voice ... was unbelievable!
The concert was all about her voice as an instrument.
"I Want to Know What Love Is" brought the house down when slotted against Christmas classics.

The album is a pure joy, in the same approach (of course, it does not include " I Want to Know ...").
BUT the music is brilliant. Soft. Musical. Classic Christmas. You can listen to just the music or listen as you have dinner, talk, relax.

Already one of my favorites. Will be yours too.

One of the other reviewers asked if there is anything Wynonna can't sing. I recommend listening to albums before reviewing them; this album answers that question. It is obvious that her talent does not extend beyond country.

I was listening to station that played her version of Ave Maria. It was atrocious. I listened to the rest of the album to see if maybe she had just tried to over reach on that piece. Unfortunately, it was not just that song. The entire album is a Christmas spirit killer.

A Different Wynonna
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
Up until now I have not been a big fan of Wynonna, but when I heard her on one of the TV shows singing "Ave Maria" she won me over. She sang it with the finess of a trained opera singer. This album gives an entire new depth to her singing voice. It actually brought tears to my eyes and gave me chills. Likewise, she gave a commendable performance with her renditions of "White Christmas" and "O Holy Night".
This is not the loud and brassy Country Wynonna, not that there is anything wrong with her country hits, but this is a entirely different
"Wynonna" that reveals a beauty from within that we have never seen before. GO BUY IT !!

Very Good Holiday Album

Good Holiday entertainment if you enjoy Wynona. I did think it would be more lively, though.
