Now in 2006, The NEW YORK DOLLS return with the follow-up to 1974's Too Much Too Soon that proves that the band hasn’t lost a step and that they are ready to show the world what they've been missing. The new studio album "One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This" captures the spirit of a band that had disappeared long before rock n roll became about big business, and presents the essence of fun, revelatory Rock N Roll in its purest form.
Three decades-and-change since they disintegrated in a burst of self-abuse and self-fulfilling prophecy, the darlings of '70s proto-punk/glam stage a return to the recording studio that's as unlikely as it is good-natured. The opening triptych of "We're All in Love," "Runnin' Around," and the downright nostalgic "Plenty of Music" argues that remaining band members David Johanson and Syl Sylvain are more interested in celebrating their survival with a little sass than rehashing the sonic anarchy that made them. Yet veteran producer Jack Douglas never lets the band (now featuring Hanoi Rocks bassist Sammi Yaffa, guitarist Steve Conte, Brian Koonin on keyboards, and drummer Brian Delaney) become too absorbed in more focused songcraft here, injecting the same edgy, pop-buzz he imparted to Cheap Trick and Aerosmith on the infectious soul-punk single "Dance Like a Monkey" and elsewhere. Helping celebrate the Dolls revival in fine fashion are guest turns by Iggy Pop (the frantic "Gimme Luv & Turn On the Light") and Michael Stipe (who harmonizes on the ballad "Dancing on the Lip of the Volcano"), as well as Against Mel's Tom Gabel on the trademark rave-up "Punishing World." The Dolls have always been a triumph of attitude over art; ultimately little has changed here other than the bracing exuberance they bring with them this time 'round. First pressings of the release contain a 45-minute "making of" featurette as well as the bonus track "17," a lugubrious workout featuring Dolls inspiration/rock progenitor Bo Diddley. --Jerry McCulley

| A Matured, Finer New York Dolls |

Any true punk rock fan knows or has heard of the New York Dolls. Remember the start of glam/punk, tight black stretch pants and died hair? Many bands since they came out back then name The New York Dolls as an influence to their own music. These guys are known for their short, humorous, catchy punk rock songs.
So David Johansen has come back with this Nw York Dolls release after thirty years of making music. This album features "We're All In Love", "Take a Good Look at my Good Looks" (nice title), and "Dance Like a Monkey" about evolution. But hey, you know if you've been playing music for that long. you have to naturally become respected and accomplished musicians, so the songs are slightly different. The Dolls have matured from the garage punk/out of tune sound. Truly matured they have.

This new album is so amazingly incredible... I wasn't too sure what to think and actually hesitated before really listening to it. I love the Dolls and have loved them for AGES! When I finally started listening to the album it wasn't til about a month or so after I got this. I caved in a bit and thought there were some catchy tunes but wasn't hooked right off the bat. But the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me and I started listening "deeper". Then finding out that they were playing I just HAD to go!!
Seeing them live doing all their old stuff as well as a TON of stuff from this new album was so amazing! Seeing them live will convince you that these guys are the real thing and that this album wasn't about trying to be who they were - it's about showing the world how they've evolved and how awesome they are NOW!
Now I listen to the album and love it all!! I can't think of a song on there that I don't like!

New York Dolls-One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This ****½
Released in 2006, almost 35 years after their last album, which was only the bands second album. Both of those albums, New York Dolls, Too Much To Soon went on to become classics. This, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This isn't far off from those two. True, this is not the original line up of the Dolls. Obviously Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolen have died, and honestly I am not too sure what happened to Arthur Kane, whether he is alive or dead is a mystery to me and most fans I think. But what is important here is not who is playing it but what they are playing, besides there is still Johanson and Sylvain. Plus they brought in members of The Libertines, a great British punk band, and members of early 1980's glam band Hanoi Rocks, so it is a pretty solid line up of musicians.
Most of the songs on the album have gone on to dominate most of the bands set list. From the sentimental opener `We're All In Love' and the oh-so-true-to-every-musicians-heart, `Plenty Of Music' and the Michael Stipe guest filled `Dancing On The Lip Of A Volcano.' All beautiful songs which the band has worked into their set along with the punky-funk fun of `Dance Like A Monkey' which evokes memories of `Stranded In The Jungle' off Too Much Too Soon. The hard rocking `Gotta Get Away From Tommy' has also worked it's was in reminding us all why the Dolls are considered one of the very first punk bands. The wonderful rocking love songs of `Rainbow Store' and the sassy yet classic Sylvain/JoHansen `Fishnets And Cigarettes' are both among the best songs that the two have ever written together or on their own solo career.
The rest of the songs on the album haven't made it to the bands live set but that doesn't mean they are any less good. `Gimme Luv & And Turn On The Light' features Iggy Pop on backing vocals which is super cool, and comes across wonderful. It was sort of like a class reuinion for the founding fathers of punk. `Maimed Happiness' plays like a 1950's fountain shop ballad with some of JoHansens most enduring lyrics ever. While `Maimed' is slow and subdued, "Runnin' Around is a rockin' blues number, and one of the better tracks on the album.
The extended album comes with a bonus track `Seventeen' written by David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain as a sort of tribute to one of their idols Bo Diddley, who is also one of the greatest and most important guitarists in the history of the instrument and in all of rock n' roll. It is a great song and a nice little gem to pull out every once in a while. Also with the album comes a bonus dvd of the band recording the album which is extremely cool! This extended version costs a few dollars more but it is more then worth the price of the album.
One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This is a great rock n' roll album. While it may not be the classic the bands debut was or a strong as Too Much Too Soon it is still a damn fine album, and easily one of the best rock albums to come along in the last twenty years. Even though it is only David and Sylvain it is still worth owning and I am just glad that the two are both playing together again. Before I end the review I feel I must note that both Sylvain and David's solo work is worth checking out.

THESE DOLLS HAVE PLENTY OF LIFE LEFT IN EM....
DAVID'S VOICE IS AS SEREPY AS EVER AND THE NEW YORK DOLLS ARE ALWAYS FUN TO CATCH LIVE......CATCH EM BEFORE THEY DECIDE TO BREAK UP AGAIN.....

The New York Dolls have always held a special place in my heart. Seeing them live when the reunited was a blast. But as far as new music was concerned I figured there would be no way they could recapture the magic without Johnny Thunders. I was wrong. Although it is a different type of magic, it is still magic all the same. Take it for what it is and enjoy.
