| Who Forced Steely Dan Into This |

That is what I thought when I heard about this CD. Messrs. Fagin and Becker are notoriously press and publicity-shy so for them to appear on this program seemed like a stretch.
McPartland tries so hard to get them to open up, it is only with the greatest reluctance that they do. If anything, Becker seems the more genial, Fagin is almost monosyllabic through the entire show.
The standard Steely Dan fare is routine, the Ellington stuff is quite good. Marian McPartland really earned her pay for this show.

Marian McPartland, piano virtuoso and stalwart of the NPR lineup, has struck an incredible chord with her " Piano Jazz" series. McPartland has led a charmed life, evident by the anecdotes she shares with her listeners each week as she picks the brains of some of music's finest artists. Imagine the possibilities with the likes of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.
Some criticized McPartland for hosting the Dan; so went the critics that Steely Dan is not a " pure" jazz act. Really? Since when did the laws of jazz exclude a little pop inflection? Much of Steely Dan's work is as jazzy as it gets.
Conversation always peppers these exchanges, so the intro is just that, a conversational intro. The discussions are as relevant as the music. Personal stories, artistic inspirations, wry observations. Then, for the music, well, what can one say? Walter and Donald cover everything from Duke Ellington to Louis Armstrong, right back to themselves. McPartland has a gorgeous solo straight in the middle with her beautiful rendition of " Star Eyes".
This is off the beaten path, but stroll a little. The other CDs in this series are worth a listen as well.

I bought this CD for my g/f for Xmas, and we gave it a listen then. She loves it. Of course, she is a hard core Dan Fan and also a piano and jazz fan. More than I am. I liked it, but she loved it! I personally wish there was more piano and less of the talking tracks, but I realize it was taken from a live jazz show on NPR.

The spotlight reviews both have the definitive reviews for this gem. If you like Piano Jazz which I have been listening to for years and if you love the Dan, this is one of the best episodes of Piano Jazz. It is a live show with an old time jazz pianist who is fascinated with eclectic musical styles. The Dan came in ready to play on her turf, on the jazz scene and you really get a sense of their limitations and strengths. All the artists stretch themselves, but there is the utmost respect shown to all the musicians.
This is not for Dan fans who aren't willing to hear something quite different. The show is honest and insightful and a true joy for me. If you don't like hearing experimentation, this may not be for you. Donald Fagan playing 3 Duke Ellington tunes....enough said.
