With her casual authority and self-effacing elegance, Barbra Streisand met her adoring public, after a long absence, for two Las Vegas concerts surrounding New Year's Day '94. The blessed results are on this disc. Playing to an arena crowd including Steven Spielberg and Michael Jackson, Streisand notes all the excitement surrounding her return with "As if We Never Said Goodbye," much to the audience's delight. The old Streisand magic--her ability to magnify the emotional essence of a song and carry one away--is all there in a graceful medley beginning with a clever rewrite of "I'm Still Here," as well as a bluesy "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)." The clockwork production includes a clever duet between Streisand and a Guys and Dolls clip of Marlon Brando. A must for Streisand fanatics, and a hint of her more elaborate "Millenium's End" show at the Grand six years later. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

It got better as the tour progressed
Customer Rating: 3 out of 5
Caveat: I used to be a HUGE Barbra Streisand fan, especially of her 1960s records and tv specials. I can see that this concert was a prelude to the tour, because she does a few things that she ended up changing as the tour progressed. The visual problem to this concert is that she's moving around too much and she actually is swinging the microphone during "Loverman". Also, this is probably my fault, but I can't get the menu to show the selections to the second act. "Loverman" sounds great and is closer to the 1967 Ray Ellis arrangement than subsequently performed later in the tour. It was also nice to see the medley of "I'm In The Mood For Love/ Speak Low/ Guilty". Barry Gibb is always going to have a friend in Barbra Streisand. With an artist like Barbra Streisand people either love her %100 or hate her %100. Hopefully this is a little more nuanced review.

This is not THE CONCERT that rivetted audiences--that one is only on VHS

This DVD, which I own, is unlike the HBO THE CONCERT in that it adds to the remarkable medley she first sang at the beginning of the greatest concert ever, and practically ruins the sharpness of it by additional lyrics that go on and on. Also, this DVD excludes the magnificent Yentl duet Streisand does with herself. Her voice is less intense here than on the VHS THE CONCERT, maybe because she is less nervous here. But that nervousness makes the concert on every level! THE CONCERT (the original) has yet to be released on DVD. No problem though--the VHS concert is just fine, unless you have to watch it daily. If that is true, you might need other kind of help! LOL...

This concert is Barbra at her best. She looks great and sounds even better. The show is well staged and the music selections are all the favorites, you remember from Barbra.
