Talentless Talent

THIS is an example of where downloading/filesharing/samples REALLY pay off. If I had paid a single dollar for this album (or anything from this "artist"), I would be LIVID.

I guess my first clue should have been the customer reviews here on Amazon. Even his supporters were lukewarm as they talked about how neither his voice, his lyrics, or the songs themselves were particularly good.

Some pointed out his command of his voice. Can he sing? Yes. He knows "how" to sing. But his voice is more annoying than Chandler Bing's girlfriend's, Janice, on Friends (OH... MY... GAWD!!!). I have a friend who likes only female vocalists. I think he might actually like Casey, because he certainly sounds like a girl. Casey's voice is what Ross the Intern from The Jay Leno Show would sound like if he had voice training.

I will not only hopefully never have to hear this album (or, ANYTHING from Casey--nothing under heaven would ever make his voice bearable), I am deleting the files from my computer permanently. Happy, RIAA?

Beautiful Music...but nothing outstanding

I first heard of him thru his cover's of Tori Amos "Butterfly" & Bjork "Army of Me" which were excellent! He's got some pretty melodies but nothing gravitating.

Astonished

Not to sound like a crazed fangirl here, but it's hard for me to write a review of this album without going into a string of superlatives. Casey Stratton has a voice that is truly unique in modern music. There probably hasn't been a voice like his since the days of the castrati. I'm not trying to insult Casey's masculinity here, I'm just trying to be descriptive. The bottom line is, the man's voice is glorious. His range seems to be from about mid-tenor to soprano. I haven't been so captivated by a voice since Jeff Buckley.

Enough about the voice, though one could never truly say enough about it. Let's talk songwriting. Standing at the Edge is full of songs both catchy and complicated -- always a welcome combination. Stratton understands that for a chorus to be epiphanous, you need to build to it. And when he gets to the choruses of his more upbeat songs, he knocks you flat with the power of his voice and the beauty of his arrangements, as in The Spirit of Jupiter and For Reasons Unexplained. Blood turned out to be a favorite, with the pounding piano and celt-rockesque chorus. The ballads on this album are no less wonderful.

Really, this man can sing whatever style he wants short of ACDC style growly screaming. If he shredded his voice with Back in Black I'd never forgive him. Not that I don't like ACDC (I do), just that Casey Stratton's voice is a thing of such natural beauty that to damage it with cigarettes or screaming would be like taking a sledgehammer to Michelangelo's David, or bulldozing Angkor Wat, or ... you get the picture.

Also, I happened across his website this morning and was pleased to discover that he has an extensive back-catalogue available at his digital music store, and has a new album out as well. He has several holiday albums too, and I'm a sucker for those. I'll be buying his entire discography as soon as I can manage (I'm po').

Ignore the haters, Casey is magical!

This CD is fantastic as is his new CD Divide, Buy them both then go to his website and purchase his other amazing music. Once you listen to this album you will be hooked. It is true that if you like Tori and Sarah you will like Casey, yet he creates his own music that doesn't copy Tori or Sarah but compliments them. Casey is magical and he deseves more exposure. Buy copies of his albums for your friends, they will be happy that you did.

Simply Beautiful Voice

Mr. Stratton's recording (STANDING AT THE EDGE) is a truly wonderful album for anyone who enjoys listening to a truly beautiful voice. This is a perfect album to play at work, to pop into the car, or to have playing at home. I am very much looking forward to Mr. Stratton's next project.
