Rooted in disco and classic AM pop from girl groups and ABBA to Strawberry Alarm Clock, Madonna made savvy, touching music throughout her first golden era. I've owned this 1990 CD release since 1993. It was the first CD I ever bought. This CD covers Madonna's best songs from her 1983-1989 albums. Everything from "Holiday" to "Vogue". All of these songs are rerecorded versions of the originals, so they sound a little different than the originals. Thankfully they didn't stray too far from the originals though. They are not crappy remixes or anything of that nature, just slightly updated for the time (1990). This is still one of my favorite CD's of my ever growing collection. I love about 15 of the 18 total songs, and that's unheard of!

This is a great collection of all of my favorite Madonna songs. I miss the Madonna of the 80's, so this was my ideal choice of Greatest Hits. Love it!

This is a collection of Madonna's greatest hits from the start of her music to 1990. Poppy gospel music, Madonna remains controvserial and popular despite her age, pushing 50 or 60 by now. Gospel shock pop.

By the time this collection was released in 1990, Madonna had already made about 90% of her most essential recordings, so there certainly are several great songs here. However, this collection is flawed in a couple of ways. Some of her most essential songs, such as "Holiday," "Borderline," "Like A Virgin," and "Like A Prayer" are all here, as they well should be. However, if you listen closely, you'll notice that many of the songs sound considerably different than they did on the LPs or cassettes that you had in the 80s. Also, some of the songs (noticeably "Borderline") have had quite a bit of their original length chopped off. Finally, there are some less-than-subtle omissions. "Dress You Up," "Angel," "True Blue," and "Causing A Commotion," which were all big hits, are curiously absent. What Madonna needs at this point is one of those Columbia/Legacy "The Essential" anthologies, because it's impossible to collect all of Madonna's greatest on a single disc, and it's somewhat surprising that after this much time, this album, along with GHV2 (which concentrates exclusively on the 90s) are the only Madonna hits collections available.
