A lot can change in three months: wars can be decided, nations can be forged... or entire species can be brought to the brink of annihilation. The Morningstar Virus, an incredibly virulent disease, has swept the face of the planet, infecting billions. Its hosts rampage, attacking anything that remains uninfected. Even death can't stop the virus-its victims as cannibalistic shamblers. Scattered across the world, embattled groups have persevered. For some, surviving is the pinnacle of achievement. Others hoard goods and weapons. And still others leverage power over the remnants of humanity in the form of a mysterious cure for Morningstar. Francis Sherman and Anna Demilio want only a vaccine, but to find it, they must cross a countryside in ruins, dodging not only the infected, but also the lawless living. The bulk of the storm has passed over the world, leaving echoing thunder and softly drifting ashes. But for the survivors, the peril remains, and the search for a cure is just beginning...

I really enjoyed the story. Most books of this ilk are hack and slash romps, but this had some real, dare I say, Flavor...

Thi`s a well-written book. It`s an excellent read that will keep you on the edge of your seat with your face in this book from start to finish.
These ones also kept me spooked all night long:
Famous Modern Ghost Stories: Selected by Dr. Dorothy Scarborough of Columbia University
Humorous Ghost Stories
The Unknown Guest

I reviewed part one of this series and lamented the fact that no one seems to be able to scare me anymore...and I really don't think authors are trying all that hard and now I finished the second installment and was even less scared. Having said that, this one is a better effort. It has some good action, and finally a little bit of originality. The second book is more of an "action" book. There's lots of fighting, most of it between humans - the zombies are really secondary to the story here, which is a shame, but the book is at least better than the first. The characters are still very simplistic and the world the author creates isn't very fully imagined, but it's a bit of guilty fun for the brain dead.
Dude, really, Sherman's tank? like we couldn't see that one coming from the first mention of the General's name? :0
(would have been funnier if the character's ribbed him about not having his own tank and then presented him with one as a surprise - I'm just saying...gotta tighten up those jokes so they don't make a thud when you drop 'em...wind up, then swing and hit it outta there)

Thunder and Ashes (2008) is the 2nd book of a 3 part Morningstar Virus series which starts with Plague of the Dead (2006) and will end with Survivors yet to be released. Morningstar is a virus caught by being bitten or scratched or if infected blood gets on an uninfected human and it causes death within hours to a week depending on the level of exposure.
This is a real zombie book full of rotting moving corpses who devour humans but with a twist as they feel pain and don't like sunlight. As in any classic zombie story, they are killed by a blow to the head. Sprinters are newly dead zombies and if Sprinters are injured anywhere other than a direct head shot, they fall down but get up as slow moving Shamblers. Two groups of survivors start out in different directions to meet up in Omaha in the hope of finding/developing a Morningstar Virus cure. It is non-stop action for these 2 groups as they battle for their lives especially with the Sherman group. However, the second group in the end equals the first group.
This book is a non-stop read of group survival involving not just the two Thunder and Ashes groups but for people all over. Some groups are thieves and opportunistic and other groups just want to live and survive (farm/rebuild, etc) but who must protect themselves from both zombies and the thieving groups. There are even government groups and depending on your viewpoint are either good or bad. The trick for everyone is to figure out who is good or bad for their particular situation as well as evade the zombies.
The author was genius in opening and closing the book with the fate of the same character. I cannot wait for the final book "Survivors".
