His romantic weekend in ruins, shy twenty-something artist Perry Foster learns that things can always get worse when he returns home from San Francisco to find a dead body in his bathtub. A dead body in a very ugly sportscoat--and matching socks. The dead man is a stranger to Perry, but that's not much of a comfort; how did a strange dead man get in a locked flat at the isolated Alton Estate in the wilds of the "Northeast Kingdom" of Vermont? Perry turns to help from "tall, dark and hostile" former navy SEAL Nick Reno--but is Reno all that he seems?

Four and a half stars

Mr. Lanyon's skills as a mystery writer are in full bloom here. The plot is most admirably conceived and executed. I must admit that I had my doubts at the very beginning of the book but it quickly manifested into a full blown "scratching my head", multi-layered, who-done-it. I noticed that a couple of people indicated in their reviews that they felt the ending/solution announced itself too soon. I didn't at all. It had me guessing up to the very end. The closest I came was having the perpetrator down to 3 characters and it did end up being one of those; however, there are/were other things going on (sorry to be so vague but no spoilers intended) that I never figured out until explained at the end. The only thing I personally found inplausible was the relationship between the two main characters--Perry and Nick. I won't say anymore than that as, again, I don't want to creat a spoiler. This book is very highly recommended!

You know what else? This would make a terrific addition for a mystery book club for anyone who might happen to be in one. I would have greatly enjoyed being able to visit with others about the action and development of so many idiosyncratic characters.

Fun read

This "haunted house" mystery is another great M/M mystery from the mind of Josh Lanyon.

The story starts off a little cliched: the shy, artistic Perry finds a dead body in his bathtub and no one believes him. So, the masculine, ex-Navy SEAL Nick goes up to check things out. And when the police arrive, something seems a little bit off about the apartment!

Great characters and an engaging story from start to finish really kept me reading.

BAM! Right from the start!

The first paragraph sets the tone for GWYS; tongue-in-cheek humor tied in a rather ugly sports coat murder mystery. Perry fleeing his apartment and crashing into Nick sucked the reader into the story. Not only are we interested in finding out what happened to the dead body in the bathtub, but also we want to know just what's going to happen between Perry and Nick.

Perry Foster is an ordinary man, nice and unassuming. A man people can identify with or at least recognize someone we know and sympathize in his attempts to do better, be more, succeed. Most all of us have been where Perry is in his search for love and romance, and the failure therein. He is the underdog sort we alternately encourage from the sidelines and duck and hide in embarrassment for him.

Nick Reno is the kind of man we all dream of either having in our life or being. Strong, competent, confident, a no-nonsense sort of man, he exudes a sensuality with unsuspected sensitivity. He is the perfect counterpart to Perry, and the two together fill the other's holes.

The third character in this story has to be the house. In contemporary 30s mystery fashion, this overly large, rambling house provides the backdrop to mysterious happenings, voyeurs, dames in trouble, and hidden treasures. From attic to basement and beyond, the house is a picture puzzle, revealing a little at a time until it's all uncovered.

This story strongly reminded me of a Raymond Chandler mystery - but with a good dose of humor. It has all the elements of a good mystery, a good murder/romance mystery - a romance that's alive and full-bodied, if seemingly doomed from the start, a mystery that has several twists and red herrings during its investigation, a cast of the usual, unusual suspects, and a dead body that disappears and winds up in unexpected places.

I greatly enjoyed reading this book and have recommended it to not only my like-minded friends, but also to those who love a good mystery with humor.

Wonderful!

When I read my first Josh Lanyon novel, I picked this one up, hoping it would be half as good as the first. It was twice as good. I thought the characters were well developed and I hope this is only the first of many novels with Nick and Perry. Wonderful read. Highly recommend. I just wish he would hurry up and convert his many books to Kindle format! I bought the other three that were available when I finished the first, but now I'm almost finished the third and about to run out of Josh Lanyon material. HELP! Josh has a very sensitive soul and he just does wonders with his characters.

Lanyon does it again - murder & romance
Customer Rating: 4 out of 5
In "The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks," Josh Lanyon does it again, he combines murder, mystery and romance all in the same book! So far of all Lanyon's book, this is the one I have enjoyed most (although "Dangerous Ground" is a close second). The story starts as Perry, a struggling artist comes home from a vacation to find a dead body in his bathtub. Running downstairs to tell the landlady and his fellow neighbors, one a very sexy ex-Navy SEAL named Nick, he has an asthma attack. But by the time the cops arrive, the body has disappeared. The next 150 pages are excellent as Lanyon moves all the players around like a good game of Clue while attempting to throw the reader off the trail of who the killer is.

However, the best part of the book was the romance of Nick and Perry. While I would have enjoyed a little more sexytimes between the two, the romance angle worked just fine for me too. Nick is coming out of a bad divorce and is reluctant to get involved with the inexperienced Perry, whose flaws and quirks are a great part of his charm, but the two cannot resist each other.

While I might have figured out the killer half way through the book, I still enjoyed the romance of the story. Pick up this title, you won't regret it!
