I liked The Time Traveler's Wife. Several people said, if I liked that, I'd love this book. I bought it, and I did not. This book is so poorly written that any prize it would have earned would be for high school sophomore fiction. . . Max. How to describe the florid use of adjectives? "Steaming" this and "steaming that in reference to food? Often in the next sentence??? A romance that has no introduction? No basis? And no rationale other than chance encounter?
This book is a waste of time. The writing is so poor that it places it only on the lowest level of supermarket shelves for purchase. If you want paranormal fiction, at least look to Marion Zimmer Bradley. Even that's not good, but at least you'll get some literary substance. This book has nothing to offer but a poorly constructed story developed by poorly constructed characters. Save your money unless your I.Q. is below 80.

Willow has been diagnosed with a life threatening illness and decides to try to photograph an eagle, a bird that she has long admired for its strength and fortitude - when she meets Darby, a man who has secrets of his own as well as a bristling personality. The two meet when Willow has car trouble and is assisted by Darby, the handsome but reclusive stranger. He lives in beatific Baker's Gully along with his trusted dog, Lucky. Willow doesn't know why but she's strangely drawn to this place and eventually comes across a cabin that covered in roses and Willow is instantly enchanted.
As might be expected, soon enough the two fall in love. This was a beautiful romance. I only wish the book had been longer so we could see their romance develop a little more slowly. I would have given this novel 5 stars had it been a little longer and shown more detail. This would have given weight to their feelings for each other, but despite its brevity, the reader is left feeling that this romance came from a deep place. This book makes you believe in true love and that some people just "click" right away and devote themselves effortlessly. This novel makes you feel that it can really happen.
Willow has separated from her husband because of her illness and at first; she doesn't trust herself to fall in love again. The reader is taken in by Darby's reticence to reveal himself to Willow, as his attraction to her grows. We discover that Darby's heart has also been broken before, but the circumstances behind his past breakup are incredible and give this story a fairy tale quality.
You get a nice look at some secondary characters and their inclusion enhances the story. As the mystery behind his life story deepens, you can see why he's at first so "gun-shy" about love. This tender tale exemplifies the ultimate sacrifice made in the name of love.

Waiting for the Rain, by M. Jean Pike is a tale of a young woman named Willow, Willy for short, who's been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and dumped by her husband for another woman. Willy is out trying to photograph eagles and comes across a cottage for rent in the boondocks. She I drawn to the cottage, and to the reclusive, eccentric owner. She feels that she belongs there and determines to spend the rest of her life there, no mater how short it may be.
Billed as a paranormal romance novel, Waiting for the Rain will appeal to any reader looking for a well-written novel. The romance is just that, romance tastefully done. The paranormal aspect is well done as well. It is a fast read and very hard to put down. Jean Pike is a master storyteller who will hook you and pull you into the story with her believable characters and story. She made me laugh and even brought a tear or two to my eyes.

I've been grappling for a single word to encapsulate this book, and I simply can't find one. Original, moving, unexpected are probably the closest I'll get, though they don't do it a bit of justice. M. Jean Pike has created something truly unique on so many levels. Consequently I'll be living with Darby Sullivan and Willow Mackenzie for some time to come. Bravo, Jean!

Romance novelist, Jean Pike, has nailed it with her heartwarming WAITING FOR THE RAIN. When twenty-eight year old Willow Mackenzie is diagnosed with a brain tumor her life tumbles into an abyss and more shattering news follows as her husband, Tom reveals he wants a divorce. Unwilling to tell Tom about her impending death, she keeps the secret from him and allows him to continue with divorce proceedings. Trying to get her life in order, she finds herself in Baker's Gulley, an off the beaten path whose terrain is known for the elusive eagle, an eagle she desperately wants to capture on film. Due to a flat tire, she begins walking. From out of nowhere, a small cottage, overgrown with roses pulls her into the captivating scene. She knows it will be the perfect place to live to wait out her impending death. Then again, she didn't intend for Darby Sullivan, a war hero to enter her life. Who is Darby Sullivan and why does the land around the cottage appear to be so perfectly beautiful while the surrounding area is drab and lifeless? Does Darby hold the key to the fountain of youth and will he be able to save Willow from dying? Perfect, tender love captivates Willow (Willy) and Darby in a love story so remarkable, you will have to read the book to understand Darby's fear of growing old and Willow's recovery. This love story will pull you into the depths of an unselfish, heartbreaking love story so complete, you won't be able to put down this compelling drama, WAITING FOR THE RAIN. Two thumbs up for Jean Pike. Well done.
