Paperback Publisher: Dragon Moon Press Darkness has inspired fear since mankind first watched the sun go down. Bad things hide in the dark feral beasts with mouths full of razors waiting for a taste of flesh. But now, the darkness is stirring with a life of its own. Crescent Station is the last bastion of civilization, floating in the cold, outer systems where colonized space gives way to the sparser settlements of the Frontier. Like the boom towns of distant Earth s Old American West, Crescent Station is a gateway to power, wealth, and opportunity for anyone who isn t afraid to get his or her hands dirty. But deep within the station s bowels, in Crescent s darkest and most secret places, an ancient evil is awakening and hungry, and it threatens the very fabric of space and time. Will the residents of Crescent Station find a way to stop it before the terror drives them insane? Or is it already too late?

I was torn between 4 and 5 stars so I gave this novel the benefit of the doubt.
Gerald Evans owns a salvage operation, piloting his ship 'Bean' (with a personality of it's own) into space to salvage dead or ravished space ships. His current base of operation is the very remote, ancient, falling-apart space station aptly named Crescent (because of it's shape), orbiting the planet Anrar III which holds nothing but a dead mining operation. Crescent's Mayor, a snaky character named Ezra Kendall, hires Gerry to run some salvages for him, at a high enough price to make Gerry question his motives. Positioned at the station is Gerry's girlfriend, Lieutenant Marisa Griffin, who works for Core Sec - Crescent's police and security forces, all part of a galactic enforcement agency. Staying at the station is Dr. Donovan Cortez and his beautiful, intelligent, and secretive daughter Ina. While at Crescent, Gerry likes to hang out at Heathens bar, owned and operated by his friend Maerl. Here and there, just about everybody occasionally bumps into Naheela, a senile old crone who knows more about Crescent than any other person. There are also the cultists, passively passing out pamphlets throughout the station.
Crescent isn't the kind of place one would stop at for a vacation or tour. It's the only functional station in a remote area of space, just now opening up to traffic by the construction of a new city on New Juno - a nearby, more hospitable planet. Crescent is ancient, and maintenance patchy at best. Level L, once flooded, still lies abandoned and haunted by the ghosts of those who once dwelt there. Even deeper, at the heart of Crescent, lies the dark, secretive Vault. Practically inaccessible and marked by a red X on a black door, the Vault contains an evil even older than crescent - or the Anrar III mining operation - older than people can imagine. For years strange occurrences have been happening involving the closed off areas of Crescent, but that's the last thing Mayor Kendall and his gang of thugs want noticed - especially with the big event coming up ... a concert by galactically popular "vatter" singer Erick Haddyrein.
Introducing the characters and the evil in the station is enough, you'll just have to read the book to find out how great Rossi's world building is, and how his characters come alive and fully fleshed out. You'll feel the evil of The Three - The Red, The Purple, and The Black - as they possess people and desperately try to re-unite. In The Vault, something icy and deadly is waking up, reaching out and infecting people, driving them towards it's own desire - to be joined again at last. The isolation and degradation of Crescent only adds to the creeping dread of The Three. If you love SciFi/Fantasy combined with horror, then this is a must-have novel. Well worth it's price, I highly recommend you read this book. Enjoy!

Well, maybe an itty bitty book light ;)
That's how I read this book (and listened to the podcast before the print version) and Rossi always managed to scare the bejeebus out of me! But, then again, isn't that why we read great horror fiction to begin with?
Get Crescent... and be afraid of the dark.

You have never been truly frightened until you put your step unto Crescent Station. Although, neither the science fiction nor the some of the main characters are fully developed; this novel will frighten you away from deep space. There are things there you just don't want to find. This horror adventure will alternately have you screaming like a little girl with every odd sound or shivering beneath the covers with every last word. I don't know about you but I can hardly wait to hear more about Gerald and Marisa. Despite or maybe because of their obvious humanity you can't wait to read more, or maybe see them in action; these guys would make a great grunge movie. Thanks, Phil and keep them coming.

Phil Rossi's work is rather creepy. Not just because of monsters going "BOO!" but because his characters are full of human frailty, doing the best they can- and often that best isn't quite good enough. The good guys often make things worse. The characters are believable, which is important because the sci-fi elements in the novel are down right... Disturbing, creepy, surreal... Whatever word you choose to define it 'Cresent' will set your teeth on edge.
