Paperback Publisher: Temple University Press Our drug prohibition policy is hopeless, just as Prohibition, our alcohol prohibition policy, was before it. Today there are more drugs in our communities and at lower prices and higher strengths than ever before. We have built large numbers of prisons, but they are overflowing with non-violent drug offenders. The huge profits made from drug sales are corrupting people and institutions here and abroad. And far from being protected by our drug prohibition policy, our children are being recruited by it to a lifestyle of drug use and drug selling. Judge Gray's book drives a stake through the heart of the War on Drugs. After documenting the wide-ranging harms caused by this failed policy, Judge Gray also gives us hope. We have viable options. The author evaluates these options, ranging from education and drug treatment to different strategies for taking the profit out of drug-dealing. Many officials will not say publicly what they acknowledge privately about the failure of the War on Drugs. Politicians especially are afraid of not appearing i??tough on drugsi??'. But Judge Gray's conclusions as a veteran trial judge and former federal prosecutor are reinforced by the testimonies of more than forty other judges nationwide. Author note: James P. Gray is Judge of the Superior Court in Orange County in Southern California. He has served as former federal prosecutor in Los Angeles and as a criminal defense attorney as a member of the JAG Corps in the Navy. In 1998 he made an unsuccessful run for Congress as a Republican against Bob Dornan. Judge Gray has discussed issues of drug policy on more than one hundred radio and TV shows and numerous drug forums around the country.

Judge Jim Gray has written an amazing book that proves the ignorance of people and our government when it comes to drugs. This book got me worked up and it made me want to try and do something about the problem. This book includes so many statistics and studies not just of our country but of others as well...you should definitely get this book!

No matter what you think about the "War on Drugs", I urge you to read this book.
Judge James Gray's position is that the U.S. is not just losing the war, it's creating thousands of casualties at the same time.
Despite relying a little too heavily, for my taste, on anecdotal evidence here and there, Judge Gray explains why this country's drug policy is so pathetically abysmal. He alludes to the racist history of drug prohibition, explains how illegal drugs directly support terrorism, shows how our civil liberties are trampled by the federal government, and how futile our efforts are in stemming the flow of drugs into the US. On every measure, we are losing the war on drugs.
However bleak the outlook may be, Judge Gray uses examples, statistics and precedent to show us what we can do to solve the drug epidemic once and for all. He focuses on narcotics regulation, similar to what we use to govern alcohol and tobacco, education about the effects of drugs, addiction treatment, decriminalization and others. His reasoning is impeccable and sustains the principles of a free society. His resolutions are also humane, and they treat addiction as an illness, not a crime. Nevertheless, Judge Gray stresses the need to punish criminals who harm others in their pursuit to support their drug habit.
It's a great book; again, one I strongly encourage all who love liberty to read and contemplate.

This is a great book. It covers nearly every thing about how and why our law have not worked. It will tell you in such great detail that you will find yourself quoting the book. If you want to open up your eyes to how ignorant our government is, this is a good place to start. BILLIONS of dollars, corrupt cops, murder, drugs. I mean its a major motion picture waiting to happen. Buy this book and please after you read it, pass it on to your Police dept. Senator, Reps.

Often when I discuss with people the failures of the so-called war on drugs, they dismiss my opinion or anyone else's as irrelevant or incapable of understanding how the war is being "won". Judge Gray's book provides answers from an authoritative source and blows apart the myth of the US "winning" the war on drugs. I have pointed dozens of people to this book and the fact that it is written by a judge has carried a great deal of weight...
