Paperback Publisher: Black Lyon Publishing Where her heart is, there will she be also ... Deep in a box of used books, counselor Tory Sasser comes across a novel without an ending: Heatherfield. As she reads the story of scarred war veteran, Jake Benjamin, her tears fall on the pages-and she could swear new words appear where once there was nothing. But the fictional town of Heatherfield isn't all it seems, nor is its creator, Destiny Paige. When Tory's car runs off the road into the mist, she's transported back to the 1940s-into the novel, trapped by the spirits that govern the place through Destiny. Even more, Tory is caught by the honest warmth and complicated tenderness that is Jake Benjamin. Realizing she's falling in love with Jake, Tory is desperate to find her way back home to reality. Yet what is more real than true love? No, Heatherfield isn't all it seems ... not at all. Reviews and Other Information: "M. Jean Pike has captured a chiller of a paranormal romance in her astounding tale Heatherfield... Her vision of the late forties is incredible. Mingled with flashbacks of war, beautiful mountain scenery and a horrible car accident, the images were vividly colorful and just plain stunning. This is a unique romance that will make you laugh, chill you with "gooseflesh" and bring tears to youreyes." Angela Steed, Author of 1080 Kiss. "Heatherfield yields a great plot with complex characters that keep the story moving at a steady pace. I was deeply moved by Jake and what he has suffered during the war. Tory is a refreshing woman who had me on the edge of my seat wondering her outcome in this story with the past and the present. M. Jean Pike weaves a spellbinding page-turner read. The story is beautifully told." Cherokee Sanders, Coffee Time Romance. "Heatherfield is an interesting paranormal tale with a unique and surprising ending. That the ending caught me unawares is an understatement, in fact, Heatherfield reminded me of a TWILIGHT ZONE episode ... The romance between Tory and Jake is delightful and the descriptions of Heatherfield and its populace are so vibrant, that I felt transported there." Marlene Breakfield, Paranormal Romance Reviews.

I thought this book was good (not great) until the ending. I still don't think I get it. You want the characters to come together at the end, but it was kind of annoying to see a man so emotional over a woman and the woman be the one to turn him away. The worse part was trying to figure out the ending. I know some people like open-ended books so they can contemplate the author's intent for the ending. I, however, am not one of them. I have thought for hours since reading it just yesterday as to what the ending means for the actual town of Heatherfield and the characters. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but it's not a horrible book.

Lots of people can put words together in a coherent manner in order to tell a story. It's quite another thing to infuse those words and stories with passion. For that reason it's rare that any work of fiction grabs my attention and won't let go until I reach the end. Ms. Pike has that passion and it permeates the entire story. And that kind of passion comes only from the heart and the courage to reveal much of oneself to the reader. One simply cannot write of such love and paranormal experiences without having lived it. And anyone who attempts to demean her understanding of the "paranormal" by suggesting it's lacking in so-called scientific explanations greatly confuses "scientifically-induced" altered states of consciousness with actual direct and personal experience of the limitless possibilities around us. Any attempt to limit "Heatherfield" to "just" a romance novel is a reflection on the reader and not Ms. Pike who is an amazing and talented writer. Indeed, "Bravo!"

| A page-turner, good characters, but holes in the story |

OK, first of all, a disclaimer: I haven't read romance novels since high school, except for maybe 3 total in the past 30 years, and all of them attracted my interested because they were of the paranormal variety.
In all 3 cases, the books had terrific character development, good pace, and were hard to put down. And, ultimately, that's what matters when reading a book, right? That you enjoy it?
I know I won't forget the characters of Heatherfield. Characters that come to life are the most important feature of any book. Well done in that respect!
However, why is it that the authors of paranormal romance novels seem to understand so little about the paranormal?
Although the book was an enjoyable page-turner, the paranormal aspect of the story was full of holes. Hence, it gets docked 1 star.
Please, authors of 'paranormal' romance novels: Please do your readers a favor and buy the entire catalog of Star Trek Next Generation and Star Trek Voyager episodes, and watch them all, before you write your next book! Then maybe your depiction of alternate realities might be a bit more believable! Evidently, most of your readers don't care, but you might attract a lot more readers if you got a bit more educated on the paranormal before attempting to write about it.

In M. Jean Pike's novel Heatherfield, devoted couselor Tory Sasser is on her way to help a client during one of her more vulnerable moments when Tory's car spins out of control, and she finds herself in Heatherfield, in 1949. This was the setting of the book Tory read earlier in the evening, a novel that it seemed Fate wanted Tory to read. Jake Benjamin, a sensitive loner, helps Tory get her bearings and offers to let her stay on his property. The two slowly develop feelings for each other, and Tory is torn between her newfound love and the desire to get back to her familiar 1999 life. This very interesting premise drew me to the book, and I'm glad it did. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could, but since I can't, and the good qualities of the book far outweigh the minor flaws, I gave it 5. I love that the character Jake is willing to show emotion, even crying a time or two in the book, which is refreshing in a romance. More often, the heroine's object of interest is a macho alpha male, but Jake is a real, relatable character. Some parts toward the end of the story became a bit convoluted, but the loose ends are tied up by the epilogue, and it was a satisfying ending to me. I'd recommend this book to just about anyone!
