I gathered about four new concepts from this book, and that's pretty good. His focus on the reality of pain was a surprise in this time of "don't hurt it". If you are not making progress on your flexibility, it is worth a look.

It is true after trying his technique, I was a lot more flexible instantly, it's like magic. It takes less then a minute to do it and you become flexible,... for a day. Results are very temporary. Waking the next morning you will be just as stiff as the morning before.
Pavel has some good ideas, but for the most part he is nuts. When he says that most people can put one leg out as if you were doing a split, and then separetely do another leg. He explains that there are no muscles or skin running all the way accross. So he blames the Central Nervous System. He completely ignores the fact that your pelvis tilts as well.
Looking back I would not buy the book. You can read about this technique on the internet it is called Active Release Technique. Chiropractors use it. And they charge money for it.

Actually I've been working with Pavels "Relax into stretch" and "forced Relaxation" video for about six month now. I bought the video, because I would try to get some of my old flexibility back from my Taekwondo practice 20 years ago.
Using these video's I got my old flexibility level back after just 1½ month of routine! Amazing.
My muscles felt (and still do) awesome and my posture improved a lot. At this moment I can do front split and I'm only 1½ inch from the ground in full side split. I'm 34 years old and way more flexible than when I practiced Taekwondo. That's really amazing.
Why are you not in full split, then, you might ask? That's because, I've felt some discomfort in the outside the knee at some point in the sitting straddle (As the book describes - Page 88) and had to work on strengthening the muscles around the knee for a while. After some time the discomfort disappeared and I could continue working on the flexibility.
I'm pretty amazed about the reviews that claim that this way of stretching is harmful and with no routines to follow. I only do a simple warm-up before my routines and I've never felt anyway of being close to tear a muscle or injure my selves in anyway, even I pushed my selves really hard once in a while. That's the thing. You must read the book carefully and listen to your body all the time(Just as I did, when I got discomfort at the knee join as written previously), when you working with the drills. Especially as a beginner, you should go slowly and learn the different types of pain e.g. "Muscle-being-stretched" pain, Muscles-being-stretched-a-bit-more" pain and "Don't do that" pain. Read the book several time to make sure you understand the alignment and posture for the drill. As in any other type of working, you should always use good judgement and never force it.
Let it happen and have patience...
I highly recommend going for the video as well. It much easier to understand, when you just follow along the instructions in a video. Even the book is well illustrated, it can be difficult to understand the drills through an illustration in the book.
The reason I bought this book was to get some more detailed information about "why this is working" and I think the price was fair enough. Fun to read and provides you with the knowledge about the principles of this way of stretching. Seems very logic, even it might seem a bit strange at first. Once you start working with it, you realize that the principles are working. It will hurt, but in a good way :)
The book is for any level of ambition, and everyone can benefit from the drills in the book.
I think the price was fair enough, if you think about all the money we spend on other stuff.
It is a onetime expense and you can benefit from it for many years ahead - and maybe pass it on to your grandchildren :)

I've had this book for several years. If you want a short and sweet guide to a type of stretching known as Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitaion (PNF) this is one of the easiest and fastest ways to grasp the concept and apply it.
** Some of the stretches look like convential Yoga, which I also love, but they involve a different type of stretch. You slightly resist the stretch and then relax the muscle and allow it to ease beyond where it was.**
Pavel goes on too much about how tough the Russians are when in reality many of them are far more fat and out of shape than he acts like. After a while his constant yakking gets old.
But all good books have a few things that aren't perfect.
## Some of the negative reviews aren't really fair. Yes the book is a little bit high and it isn't all that long. But the good part is that the pictures and descriptions are easier to get to than if it was a thick book with lots of needless writing. ##
## I've never before singled out another reviewer but I want to this time. Mohammed F. El-Hewie has a book out called Essentials of Weightlifting and Strength Training. I have it. It's a thick and good book. But it has some bad advice where he doesn't realize the importance of sufficient rest between workouts. If you know the theory of High Intensity training you know that working out every other day is too often. It doesn't allow your muscles to fully recover. The reason I'm mentioning this is that he seems to always put down other books on strength training or flexibility. I think it's partly jealousy and also a bit of snobbery.
He thinks that just because he is a doctor he knows it all and anybody else with a different opinion has to be wrong. ##
** Pavel's Relax Into Stretch is a good short and sweet book that will help you improve your flexibility whether you are a martial artist or weightlifter or just an ordinary person. Read it and use the Muscle Tension and Release type of active stretch and add it to your passive Yoga type of stretches.
