One of the hottest new voices in paranormal romance, Shelly Laurenston knows how to do it all, delivering tales that are wickedly funny, action-packed, and scorch-your-fingers sexy. With The Mane Event, she proves just how delicious love can be once you unleash your inner beast... Christmas Pride How come all the good-looking ones are insane? That's what runs through NYPD cop Desiree "Dez" MacDermot's mind the minute she hooks up again with her childhood buddy, Mace Llewellyn. It isn't just the way he stares at her with those too-sexy gold eyes--as if he could devour her on the spot. Or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy Seal bod-o-death. It isn't even that he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle. It's more about that disconcerting, shifting-from-man-to-lion thing that unhinges her...and makes her want more. Mace likes making Dez crazy. In fact, he likes her any way he can get her--in bed, on the desk, here, now, again. Together, they'd always been trouble, but Dez has no idea just how good trouble can feel... Shaw's Tail Brendon Shaw, hotel owner and lion shifter, has seen better days. He's been beaten, had a gun to the back of his head, and had to be rescued by a Pack of shape-shifting wolves. He didn't think he'd survive the night, much less find the woman of his dreams. And he never thought the woman of his dreams would have a Tennessee accent and wear cowboy boots. Once he sets his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go. Ronnie Lee Reed is ready to change her life, and New York City is the place where any girl--even one who runs with a Pack--can redefine herself. First order of business: find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion-shifting, oh-my-what-big-um-paws-you-have men. Then again...

I downloaded a Kindle freebie in this series and decided to go to the beginning and read the books in order. After reading a few chapters, I almost decided to put it aside - the writing just seemed immature. I kept going, however, and the writing improved. I ended up enjoying both stories. The first was better than the second (better plot and pacing, and great sizzle). The plot and pacing of the second book got bogged down in too much sex, but it was partly redeemed by the humor. I had a lot of laugh-out-loud moments while reading the second. Overall, it was worth the read for the steam and tension (better in the first), and humor (great in the second). Looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

I really liked the first story - Christmas Pride = 5 stars. Very much a page turner. 2nd story - Shaw's Tale was also good - 4 stars. Liked this story but charcters Brendon/Rhonda did not have the same punch for me that Mace/Dez did.
Characters very funny and really enjoyed the were world that author created.

Not Your Average Romance!!!

"The Mane Event" is the first book in the "Pride" series. It is a paranormal romance. I LOVE this book! This was the first book that I have ever reread and I have reread it several times. Finally a book where the female characters are strong in their own right. They say what's on their mind and let the chips fall where they may. They are not waiting for the man to save the day, but instead deciding whether or not he is up to the task of being their lover and soulmate. The character development is flawless.
The two short stories tie into each other and they have a great healthy balance of humor, danger and HOT, naughty, erotic sex that will have you drooling and dragging your nails against the sheets in search of your own king of the jungle.
This was my first introduction to Shelly Laurenston and I became an avid fan of her work. The books that follow, have lived up to or surpass my expectations. She doesn't disappoint. I have recommended and continue to recommend her books to every die-hard romance fan, I know.

Lions, She-wolves, and Humans, Oh My!

The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston consists of two stories: Shaw's Tail and Christmas Pride. Christmas Pride is about an ex-Navy officer who has come home twenty years later to claim the girl that he has loved since he was fourteen. Except now she is a thirty-six year old ex-Military Police divorcee turned New York City cop. So in other words, she is pretty tough. Mace Llewellyn has longed for Dez MacDermott for years and now he wants a shot with her, but Dez has been burned in love and doesn't want anything long-term which is what Mace is gunning for. It is a sweet reunion that turns steamy hot fast especially when Mace shifts for the first time in front of Dez into his lion form. What a surprise for Dez considering she thought he was human for years! There is a storyline in here with Dez investigating a murder of a lion shifter, but that part of the story is pretty weak with poor plot development. S. Laurenston is known for her steamy hot romances filled with some crude dialogue and humor. Christmas Pride was okay, but it could have been better if there had been just as much attention to the plot. The premise sounded pretty good on the blurb, but failed to deliver.
Shaw's Tail is the second story in The Mane Event. Whereas, with Shaw's Tail, I felt like this story wouldn't be as good after reading the blurb, but the story was better than I imagined. This story involves Brendon Shaw, rich hotel-owner and lion shifter, and Ronnie Lee Reed, crazy, wild She-wolf. I was not expecting to like Ronnie Lee because of how her character was portrayed as being somewhat of a slut, but I ended up liking her. Brendon Shaw is rescued from a lion attack by a pack of wolves, but Ronnie Lee is given the personal task of watching over him until he heals. Brendon or Shaw immediately knows that he wants Ronnie Lee for his mate because she protected him and helped him heal from his wounds, plus he thinks she looks hot especially in her boots. I'm visually a Daisy Duke/Jessica Simpson type here. Ronnie Lee really likes Shaw, but she doesn't want anything but a fling with him. So Shaw is determined to change her mind. There is a secondary storyline here involving Shaw's brother which leads me to believe he will have his own story. I really liked Shaw and Ronnie Lee. They had lots of chemistry together. I enjoyed reading this story more than the first one. S. Laurenston will not disappoint you if you are looking for hot and heavy sex scenes because there are plenty. This book won't be a keeper on my bookshelf, but I still give it 5 stars!

Lion Shape-Shifters... Know how to love!
Customer Rating: 4 out of 5

|
There are shapeshifters living secretly among typical humans and these two stories feature them.
"Christmas Pride"--Mace Llewellyn is back in New York after many years away. He's intent on finding his school-days love of some twenty years ago. He's a lion shape-shifter where the women in the family rule. Apparently, his sister is the head of the pride and is the epitome of the nasty rich bitch, lion or not, but Mace is determined to not bow to the rules of the Pride, particularly when it comes to whom he loves. In this case the girl he's after is fully human and a tough police detective. In the past, Dez Mac Dermot, thoroughly a girl from the Bronx had been warned away from the wealthy Llewellyns, but twenty years later, will she be warned off again? Certainly not, if Mace has anything to do with it.
Mace and Dez are both interesting characters, very strong and settled in their element, but nicely ready for a bit more in the love-life department. There is an interesting mystery plot that this romance (with lots of hot sex scenes) hangs on, which could have been elaborated on, for those who desire much more plot, but was good enough for those who are reading for the sex. The best part was the characterization, presenting two developed main characters along with a large cast of supporting figures.
"Shaw's Tail"-- Takes up right after the events of the first story. Shaw was beaten up and nearly killed--saved by the characters in the first story. One of the Wolf Pack girls who also helped save him, watches him in the hospital over Christmas when everyone else is enjoying themselves elsewhere. He falls in love with her, but Ronnie is used to being very independent (well, relatively, within the tight relationships of the pack) and leading a wild party life. She's been thinking she wants to change things and settle down a bit, maybe go back to college, but settling down, particularly with a Lion-shifter... It's freaking her out more than she thought it would, great sex or not.
Ronnie is a great character. Shaw is funny, but a bit less well depicted, particularly after reading about Mace with his well-developed background. Still, this is definitely fun to read. And there's a bit of the mystery plot remaining... Shaw was looking for his troublesome younger brother when he was attacked, so what is his brother involved in and will it cause them all more problems? Too bad that plot fizzles, but, again, if you're reading for the sex scenes, this won't really matter.
