Perfect book for all levels of IT. The amount of information the author placed on this book will justify any price tag, making it one of the first books I recommend for those who want to deploy, refresh, or learn the new platform that is Windows Server 2008.

I have only had this book for a couple of weeks and have already used this book a couple of times for my job, and so far, so good. I needed some information on hyper v and it got me through just fine. If you are looking for a great Windows Server 2008 guide, this one should fit the bill just fine.

This manual is cleary written and organized. Everything you should know about Windows Server 2008 is here. Stanek has a good sense about what's important and does a great job pointing out the features of the OS. With almost 20 years of Win experience under my belt, I got this book to keep me skills sharp. I've learned a lot of new tricks from this book. Nothing escapes the author's eye, every section clears up something or gives expert insights in ways I wouldn't have thought of myself.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone upgrading from previous versions and any current administrators. As a detailed reference it can't be beat. Great work, William!

Newbie pointer: Ch. 3 & 7 are all about server and server core. Ch. 3 tells how to install both. Ch. 7 tells how to configure at the gui or command line. There's literally hundreds of command line examples throughout the book too. Plus once you install the tools on another box, like it says, you can manage using gui from another box.
Why this is the best: William Stanek is well known for his acclaimed "Pocket Consultants" from Microsoft, and in this book he delivers an indepth, authoritative guide to Windows servers and Windows networks. In 1482 pages (including index), the author details just about everything you need to know to succeed with Windows servers. Windows Sever 2008 is a major new operating system from Microsoft, not just an update, and this makes this book even more important.
Stanek has organized this book into six parts, including planning, management, storage and file systems, networking and print services, Active Directory and security, and disaster planning and recovery. He discusses concerns regarding upgrading, versus a clean install of Windows Server 2008, and the all important issue of whether to even consider loading Windows Server 2008 on existing hardware, versus purchasing new hardware. He discusses whether and when to install server or server core and then tells how to install both. Once you install server or server core, he tells you how to install and configure roles, role services, and features using both the GUI and the command line.
This important book is designed to accommodate readers at every skill level, from beginning administrators to intermediates to advanced system administrators. If you are new to Windows Server 2008, you'll want to read the early chapters closely in particular Ch. 1, 2, 3, 4 5, 6, 7. If you are an intermediate or advanced admin, you'll probably only need one read of these chapters to get everything you need to know to install and configure and optimize your boxes.
From Chapter 8 on the author, Stanek, gets into the deeper and deeper details. There's almost 100 pages on performance tuning, monitoring and logging. Unlike many books, every networking technology gets an in depth, authoritative chapter, important as these are critical to keep running smoothly. Active Directory isn't a footnote either, it's an extended 300 page in depth discussion. 100 pages on high availability and recovery solutions complete the book.
Windows Server 2008 Inside Out is a book you really need whether you have one winserver book or ten already.

I would give this book four to five stars except it is missing two very key features in 2008; information on Server Core and Hyper-V. When I read all of the reviews saying how great the book is, I expected all of the newer features to be covered but to my dismay the two areas I am working in are not covered at all! So folks beware, if you want information on Server Core or Hyper-V do not buy this book. The AD content is very good and very helpful and overall the book is well written and so far I have not found any mistakes. Good read other than what I mentioned.
