Customer Reviews:

THE definitive book on color
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
"Hawthorne" is to painting what Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style" is to writing. Authoritative guidance--vigorous and concise. Best read as a companion to "Hensche on Painting" (his assistant, who continued his teaching) Hensche on Painting.

--Note to reviewers unhappy with the lack of illustrations in the book: Search "Charles Hawthorne" or "Henry Hensche" (in addition to illustrative images, you will find quite a few artists who have studied directly, currently practice, and continue to teach this painting approach).

In Between My Brushes and Paints
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
Painters: you will love this book. It's like the Cliff notes of our medium. The title says it all because this book is not about that ephemeral thing called "art", it's more like a pocket tutor on the 2-D medium of painting, minus the usual explanation of what types of paints and brushes to buy. Hawthorne had a gift of simply putting into words what is so difficult to teach. The book is made up of notes kept by his actual students directly quoting things he said to them over his prolific career as a teacher. He is talking directly to you like he is in front of your easel, guiding you on your journey to proficiency. I've underlined every page. I read over the highlights and every time, it gets me focused and recharged ready to face the blank canvas. Painters are known to cherish this book and I count myself as one of them. I keep my copy of Hawthorne stashed away right next to my easel, in between my brushes and paints.

THE VERY BEST !
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
Every painter needs to read this book AND keep it close to them. By reading it over and over, one gets a more thorough understanding of the act of painting.

It's a fabulous book.

An Art Book Worth Reading
Customer Rating: 4 out of 5
Charles Hawthorne was a very good painter in both oils and watercolors , and a very well respected teacher. In his book his philosophy and approach are made clearer and he gives a pretty good explanation of what he feels the difference is between the drawing and painting points of view in art, but unfortunately there is a complete lack of illustration except for the cover. You'll have to search the web to find some extra images of his work. His paintings range in style from realistic to expressionistic .I particularly like his watercolors and when I first read the preview here on amazon.com as i read I could imagine scenes in watercolor as illustration for the text and while my paintings vary considerably from hawthorne's personal style I think the lack of images in the book forces you to see what you would do with his advice. Not as a rehash of other's work, but your own personal vision. Can you put a price on that?
I recommend you read this book, work with it for a long time and then seek out hawthorne's work and that way you can see what your interpretation is like first .I think it's a really good book and it's inexpensive too!

Required reading for my students!
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
Hawthorne on Painting was the most recommended book by master artist and teacher Sergei Bongart and, like most of his other students, I make it required reading for artists studying with me. The essential truths within are clear, even without pictures, and you'll find yourself reading and re-reading the rich, pithy text. A plein air painter cannot do without its information and inspiration!

Also of interest to artists...
