This is one of the few paranormal series I have managed to stick with over the last couple of years. But I think it's largely due to the fact this series feels more fantasy than paranormal. The world of the Psy is just so different from any thing else out there, and it adds an element that sets it apart from the others.
Branded by Fire focuses mostly on the Changelings of her world, but the Psy are always a very prominent part of each book. Nalini Singh is simply an amazing talent. The uniqueness of the characters and the world is so unbelievably awesome. She is one of the best when it comes to writing two people and how they interact, and she brings something new with every book. This book grabbed me, just as the other five did and didn't let go til the last page. Her writing is fast-paced, and the chemistry is absolute. And this time around she does it with two different changeling species...Leopard and wolf...Can a puppy dog really make a kitty cat purr?
I loved this book as I have loved each book previously! Provocative, intense, a sensual playground...that's what fills the pages in this Psy/Changeling series, and especially so in this one!

This series just goes from strength to strength, each book as good or better than the last. Mercy and Riley are two dominants who have been rubbing each other the wrong way for some time. Mercy is a leopard and sentinel in the DarkRiver pack. Riley is a lieutenant from the SnowDancer wolf pack. How are a dog and a cat going to come together? With much teeth and claws! This is one of those romances where the pair thought they couldn't stand each other but can't seem to keep from drifting together every chance they get. Since they are both seconds to their alpha and in a new alliance they are thrown together even more on pack business. Finally they begin to see that there is a roaring hot sexual attraction under all that irritation and agree to a one night stand. One Night ONLY. As if. But the best thing about our author is that she really knows how to write a story where two dominants coexist happily.
Too often I am disappointed by authors who write a strong female character and then have her submit all over the place once she is in love. Not so with Mercy. She is strong from start to finish. And while she does not submit to Riley she does soften. Just because she is strong doesn't mean that she can't be loving and giving. It is beautiful to watch Riley give her a place to show that side of herself. And this isn't a story where they can't stand each other but the sex is so great they live with it. Instead Singh beautifully shows how as they really get to know each other's real self they find much to admire and indeed to love about each other.
Riley is still suffering from feeling he failed to protect his sister Brenna from being kidnapped and tortured. In his mind he needs a nice little submissive wife who stays safe at home so he can pour all that protective energy all over her. But if that is what will make him happy then why can't he stop thinking about one very unsubmissive cat? Indeed as the story develops we find that Riley's background isn't filled with submissive little cupcake women at all. In fact, his attraction to Mercy has quite alot of foundation. I really enjoyed watching Riley dig deep into himself and see that what he thought was best for him wasn't what he needed at all. This kind of self reflection is what makes the characters in Singh's series come alive. She didn't just tell us that Mercy and Riley were falling in love with each other we got to SEE it happen. They both make some mistakes along the way but that just makes it more realistic. By the end Riley loves Mercy so much he is willing to make some big sacrifices for her that will touch the hardest heart.
We also learn more about the Human Alliance and the trouble they are trying to brew as well as hear from some of our favorite characters from earlier books. That is one of the things I love most about a series. This one just keeps getting better. I don't even have to think twice about getting on the pre-order list.

I am a big fan of the entire Psy/Changeling series and they all rate high for me. This one is my favorite because it had my favorite type of story line. The couple is together very early on in the book and then have to work their way through their issues. The background of the Psy/Changeling world and it's upheaval continues to enthrall me.

This is the best entry into the Psy-Changeling series so far. Ms. Singh does a great job of playing the tension between Mercy and Riley, while giving just enough time to developing other characters in the Psy-Changeling world. My heart broke for Sienna. I can't wait for the next one!
