I really can't figure out what the title of the book has to do with the book itself. It was hard to really get into reading it because it jumped around from one cat to another, not really giving each cat their own personal story. One minute you read their name, then the owners name, the diagnosis, then it's gone: but this doesn't happen all in one chapter. When one cats name was mentioned, by the time a chapter or two have passed without mentioning the same cat, I would forget what cat was being talked about. It was mostly about a research center that was diagnosing & trying to treat the cats brought in & not really showing any emotion about the animals. Even though they pretty much knew what the outcome was going to be, they could have shown something...anything at all that would give you the impression they even really cared. I understand it's a tough job because there is so little hope for the animals, but just because they're animals doesn't mean you can't still have some compassion for them & what they're going through. I could never get attatched to any one cat because there were so many. I feel this book could have been better written, taking more time with each cat & their story & could have shown a little more emotion for these cats. It was like "Here's another cat, same diagnosis & treatment, same ending". And I am truely boggled by the title. The author should either have given reference to what the title had to do with the book or should have given it a different one. I had compassion for all these cats because I'm an animal lover, but I really felt nothing by the end, where I've usually gotten attatched to at least one animal. I was disappointed & really don't suggest this to anyone who's looking for a book like "Dewey" or "Squeeky". This is nothing like those books.

I loved this book, which I got when it first came out. As other reviewers said, the cats encountered here will stay with you forever. The book helped me over a very hard time when I lost my two dear cats to old age. This is for anyone who ever loved a cat. Ms. Mooney writes with the right mixture of compassion and realism. Thank you, Ms. Mooney!

A Snowflake in My Hand A good idea what takes place in an animal hospital and in the minds and hearts of vets and technicians who work with terminally sick animals. Can teach us to treat our terminally ill human friends with more kindness after reading the humility shown by ill animals.

...this time I felt the need. Of all the books I read after my sweet black cat, Flash!, died a year and a half ago, this one meant the most. Ever since my sweet boy passed away at the ripe old age of 11 (old for a cat with FIV, I was told), I searched for a book like this one...someone who feels as I do, and Samantha Mooney captures this. My heart aches when I think of Christmas without him...spring without him...he was alive just a little while ago...where did he go? What happened to him? Ms. Mooney seems to be the only writer that shares these thoughts with me, and so this book helped me tremendously. If you're mourning a loss as deep as ours, please don't hesitate...treat yourself to this book.
