She thought her heart was safe, but… Reckless, wild, and beautiful, Lily Lawson delights in shocking proper London society -- and now she is determined to rescue her sister from an unwanted impending marriage to the notorious Alex, Lord Raiford, by fair means or foul. But while she succeeds outrageously, Alex is a master gamesman who is not to be undone. Alex has lost one bride, yet he is enchanted by this remarkable lady who is willing to break any rule to flaunt her independence. When Lily offers him only scorn, he counters with kindness, and he parries her blistering barbs with gentle words and a soft, tender touch. The spirited miss will pay dearly for her interference -- with her body, her soul, and her stubborn, unyielding heart. But will Alex's own heart be the prize to be won in this sensuous game of love?

I'm also glad I read "Dreaming of You" first. Too many things in this book aren't plausible. Some spoiler alerts. First, I can't believe that Derek would not lend Lily money, at all. There should have been an explanation for this... any explanation, because it makes Derek more heartless than he really is. Secondly, is Alex galactically stupid, not to notice the changes in a woman's body once she's had a baby? No stretch marks, she has a perky bosom and more, as if she's 18 years old. No mention of her age. We know that Alex is a contemporary of his neighbor in age, which is 30, yet has a 12 year old brother. That's a huge spread. I'm disappointed that Lily has to have a man to fix her problems in the end, because she is so naive, as we are told, but that is not believable. Her strong will to survive is just crushed and it isn't a pretty sight. I much preferred Dreaming of You, because the mousy woman is the strong one in that book. Lily has her spirit crushed by an overbearing manhandling Lord and yet he has the brains to solve her problems, talk in front of Parliament, when he can hardly run his own estate. If I had to hear about his broad hairy chest one more time, I was going to scream. Lily not believing that Alex would not understand her problem and confide in him, isn't believable either or that she thinks he would leave her. He proves over and over again that he doesn't turn away from scandal. Part of me doesn't like strong alpha males who threaten to spank women and yet here it's kind of sexy when he drags her from her card game in a scandalous costume. She goes too far and someone does have to stop her from self destruction, but he goes a tad too far at times. Usually Kleypas heros aren't so alpha and he's a bit much for me, but not as bad as other novels.

Lily is a wild girl with a past that haunts her, Alex is an Earl who lost his fiancé in a riding accident and doesn't think he can love again. When Lily's sister becomes engaged to Alex, despite being in love with an old friend, Lily gate crashes the wedding preparations and tries to help. This shakes Alex out of his grief and allows Lily to see he isn't the man she thought he was, leading to a moment of weakness when they decide to marry. This book is essentially about second chances and acceptance. The conflict revolves around the secrets of Lily's past and the blackmailer who is slowly driving her to desperation as she runs out of money and resorts to gambling with her body to try to raise the cash. One of the better early books by Lisa Kleypas this is often overshadowed by the sequel `Dreaming of you' whose main character, Derek, makes his first appearance here.

***spoiler warning*** It took this book quite a long time to get into action. The part when Lily was living with her family and Alex was far too long and there was not enough action. His obsession with his ex fiancee was a bit annoying after a while. After they made their bet and got married, things got along nicely. I loved seeing them falling in love. And for once, the hero was a bit more sensitive and ready to proclaim his love even before he knew what she felt for him. Well, I would have liked it if she trusted him a bit more and told him about her daughter earlier and not in the last minute. And she kept him at a distance after they found her daughter - because she was too emotionally upset. But before she found her and she was keeping everything from him, she was fine? I didn't like his aunt and the way she thought she could control everything.
Well, despite all that, I liked this book a lot. It made me laugh and it made me cry. And I really loved the hero :) And I can't wait to read the sequel :)
