Combine the smoky cellars of a Weimar-era cabaret with the rock n’ roll fury of Joan Jett, PJ Harvey and The Violent Femmes and you have a remote idea of what to expect when experiencing The Dresden Dolls.

strange and unusual in all the greatest ways

an awesome group and no better place to start with the self-titled. very entertaining and you wouldn't expect a duo to produce like this.

nostalgic

While I might not be as fond of the Dresden Dolls other work, this album is one of my favourites. I love how the entire album makes you feel nostalgic for something, but you can never quite figure out what. Truce, The Perfect Fit, Half Gravity and the Jeep Song (which is hilarious). The rawness of it is what makes it special. Surprisingly, I cannot STAND Coin Operated Boy, haha. Other than that one song (which everyone likes except for me :P ), this is a decent little album.

Essential album.

Beautiful dark cabaret music from the East Coast art movement. Amanda Palmer has a unique singing style and the piano and drums work together in a fantastic gothish style....great album full of great songs. For fans of Tori Amos, Bat For Lashes, and Rasputina.

Good, but not great

There's a couple of songs on here that made me take notice of the Dresden Dolls in the first place (Girl Anachronism and Bad Habit). They are fine punk songs, with all the energy and ironoy that comes along with that, mixed with an interesting cabaret style. I've always enjoyed this mixing of styles (like The Pogues and Irish folk music or Gogol Bordello with gypsy music) with more traditional punk songs and driving rythms.

Unfortunately, a lot of the songs on this album don't have that same energy. The lyrics keep the irony, anger, and comedy of punk rock, but the music is more traditional cabaret piano. It becomes uninteresting to listen to.

I personally like Yes, Virginia... (the only other Dresden Dolls album I own) better than this soley because of the more energetic music.
