  • Ellen DeGeneres has done everything, from starring in hit sitcoms and movies, to writing best-selling books, to having her own new talk show, scheduled to debut this fall. But she's never forgotten her roots as a stand-up comedian. Taped at New York City's Beacon Theatre before a live audience, Ellen DeGeneres: Here and Now features the kind of humor that first made her a star, offering her offbeat insights into everyday life. Her feel good humor touches on something that everyone can identify with from the obligatory gay joke, procrastination, fashion, public cell phone use, airline etiquette, self-esteem, and more.

With a loose, free-associative flow, Ellen DeGeneres glides through her 2003 HBO special, Here and Now. In just the first 10 minutes she touches on procrastination, new paint colors, television commercials, and mental disorders--topics that fit into the show's subtitle, Modern Life and Other Inconveniences. By the end, she's also spun out sneaky jokes about cell phones, memory loss, elevators, vocal inflections, pickle jars, and social embarrassment. Her genius is that she never seems like a genius; on the contrary, DeGeneres seems like your next door neighbor pointing out the obvious, yet somehow an hour whizzes by in complete enjoyment. It's peerless observational humor--nothing groundbreaking or piercingly satirical, but simply fun. --Bret Fetzer

    Great comedy
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
Ellen at some of her best! The woman is a comedic genius in my opinion. I saw the original HBO presentation of this show and was thrilled to be able to get this on dvd. Her humor is always imaginative, current and clean. If you enjoy just plain old fashioned clean creative comedy, you will love this even if you have never heard her perform before. Worth watching over and over.

Family-worded but hilarious! Appropriate to give my high school nephew and my retired parents in their stockings!

    Shamefully below par

As much as I like Ellen DeGeneres, I realise that her stand-up acummen is not as good as her acting and hosting. She was woefully out of form on the evening of the filming. The lack of humour in her stories is quite disappointing. she tries hard to extract laughs from an enthusiastic audience, but the result is disappointing. The dvd has its moments but they are very few and far between. It was a waste of my money and I intend to sell it.
I can't see how anyone could rate this above 2 stars. You'll do well to give this a miss.

    For a good laugh

No matter what kind of mood you're in at the time, you are sure to laugh so hard your eyes will water with this video. She is HILARIOUS making fun of everyday things we go thru in life. MUST SEE!

    Ellen Degeneres Here and Now
Customer Rating: 4 out of 5
Put aside any notions of Ellen you have from the Ellen Degeneres show. I have watched the show and not found it particularly funny. Here and Now, on the other hand, was extremely funny (if you like the show, this will probably be even better). Ellen pokes fun at everyday occurrences and wraps everything up in a theme which everyone can probably relate to: procrastination. Here and Now offered profound thoughts in ways that don't require too much thought... It was a very well-spent hour.
